Birthday presents
There's always a hug that you remember for years to come. A moment- whoever you are.
For me, I have known this person for a year but it feels like so much longer. Originally, we met through friends in a different city but soon realised our parent's homes were only 8 minutes from each other. At first, I felt we did things together during lockdown just because it was convenient but it never felt like I was convenient around him.
We'd planned a trip (as friends and both careful due to social distancing) for my Birthday which got cancelled due to my Dad ending up in hospital from heart failure the night before. I called him around 11.45pm, he didn't answer and I thought he'd be sleeping but he listened to my voicemail and he phoned 5 minutes later. He asked if I needed anything, food or company, he offered to personally drive over to give me hug. I said no, I was desperate to calm my mum down and by that point it was almost midnight. Also, hugs aren't really social distancing.
On my Birthday, he phoned and asked what I'd done on the day. He then proceeded to take me to Asda so I could do the shopping, took me home to drop the grocieries (he didn't have to be there, I could drive but he didn't want me to be alone), waited in his car (because the partial lockdown that came into force that day meant he couldn't go inside my house) and then drove me to McDonalds at 8.30pm - he demanded that we'd go when he realised I'd barely done anything for myself or eaten.
We sat and ate waayyy to many Mozarella Sticks and I forgot the world a little, he stopped so suddenly mid-sentence and said with a new-found grin 'I think you'll like this'- he drove to a spot nearby where the moon was at it's brightest and you could see the view of the whole of the city. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face.
He feels like home, he calms me down, he is forever by my side supporting me. However, we're just friends and we are beyond the point of ever going into a relationship.
My heart ached when you held the back of my head, your fingers in my hair as we hugged in your car and you whsipered 'Happy Birthday'.
That hug was the best Birthday present I could ask for.
I've known for a long time. I would choose him. I can't get him out of my head when I try to go on dates with other people.
I will continue to support and love him - always.
